Nike SB X Wasted Youth Dunk Low Pro

Do you remember punk rock, the supposedly anti-conformist music genre whose followers were into dying their hair in rainbow colors and hammering rivets into their leather jackets? No one could ignore punk rock in the last third of the 20th century: you didn’t get past it on the radio, where the Sex Pistols sang about the downfall of Great Britain. Ditto fashion, which was dominated by crazy hairstyles and ragged punk rock T-shirts. And you certainly couldn’t ignore punk rock in the pedestrian zones of German cities, where beer-drunk punks, usually in tow with equally disheveled canines, preyed on the pocket change of vexed shoppers. Punk was not only a music genre but also an attitude: it was about severing the shackles of the crypto-fascist mainstream and embracing a self-determined life. Hence the DIY spirit mentioned at the beginning, which ultimately constituted the punk aesthetic. Today, of course, punk is as anti-establishment as shopping at Hot Topic. Although punk hardly plays a role in popular music, the style at least is becoming relevant again. There may be various reasons for this: on the one hand, everything repeats itself eventually, and on the other, designers and decision-makers at work today may share a youth that was significantly influenced by punk rock. Enter Japanese artist and designer Verdy. Verdy’s brand, Wasted Youth, is a love letter to punk rock. Translating the hard edge of punk music into fashion and design, Wasted Youth managed to become a staple of Japanese pop culture. Verdy, who already collaborated with streetwear brand Babylon LA, and who has often cit ed punk rock as one of his prime influences, has now developed a Dunk Low, which should be one of the most intriguing releases in 2021. The almost entirely black Nike SB x Wasted Youth Dunk Low comes with all kinds of contrast stitching and sewn-on patches that give the shoe a punk-appropriate DIY look. However, you’re free to customize the shoe to your heart’s content and redesign the shoe according to your wishes, for instance, by tearing off the leather Swoosh. Mind, however, that doing so will render your Dunk nonreturnable and decrease its resell value. In contrast to mother’s boys suffering from sneaker addiction, real skateboard punks don’t need return policies.
