Anthony Van Engelen, also known as AVE, is one of those dudes that gets people revved up for skating. Seriously, the co-founder of Fucking Awesome is, like, over 40 and still descends upon handrails, ledges, bowls, and stairs like a hawk on its prey. In terms of raw energy, CERN’s Large fucking Hadron Collider ain’t got shit on AVE. As his career on Vans is completing its fifteenth year AVE got the chance to create a new pro model: a technical and visual update to the popular AVE Pro, the new shoe was rebuilt from the ground up, including technical wizardry such as DuraCap anti-abrasion layers and RapidWeld heat fuse technology for increased durability, as well as Vans’ tried-and-tested Ultracush shock-absorbing midsole. The real innovation here, however, is the all-new outsole: forgoing the previous AVE Pro’s vulcanized construction, Anthony Van Engelen opted for a more durable cup sole that unites flexibility with durability. Dubbed UltimateWaffle, the sole remains true to Vans’ focus on grip while adding that extra bit of stability. To foreground these enhancements, AVE chose to color the outsole in bright translucent turquoise, while keeping the rest of the shoe gray-ish.
