With their latest capsule collection, Carhartt WIP adds another entry to their already extensive list of collaborations with music artists and record labels, both known and unknown. Underground Resistance (UR), a Detroit-based music project and label founded in 1989, subscribes to the latter, seeing as UR is a straight up legend in the electronic music scene. It’s fitting, too, since Carhartt was also founded in Detroit, exactly 100 years earlier, in 1889. UR’s music is an eclectic mix of Industrial, house, EBM and Hip Hop. One of the collective’s founders, Jeff Mills, said UR’s music was inspired in equal parts by Public Enemy and Kraftwerk (go listen to their track “Afrogermanic,” and you’ll know what he’s talking about). True to UR’s and Carhartt’s provenience, their capsule collection includes typical American work wear. There’s the water-repellent, 3M Thinsulate-enhanced Siberian Parka, a hooded Car-Lux jacket with insolation technology (thanks to it’s 50-50 cotton and polyester mix), a beanie, a pair of working pants and a heavy-duty cotton t-shirt – all, of course, include generous UR branding. The collection perfectly illustrates both Carhartt’s and UR’s roots in the American working class, which is why their collaborations feels quite natural.
