“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”, yells Roberto Benigni. And he’s right: the ice cream segment amounts to about $70 billion in worldwide revenues in 2019, with a rising trajectory. Every German eats roughly 2 gallons of ice cream per year, which is probably, hopefully, more than sauerkraut. Part of ice cream’s success is Ben & Jerry’s, which maybe is not the biggest, but certainly the most colorful globally operating ice cream company around. Founded by hippies Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1978, the first B&J parlor was located in an old gas station in Vermont. Over the years, Cohen and Greenfield caught the public eye with innumerable humorous advertisement campaigns and ice cream names. For instance, when Barack Obama promised Americans and the world that “Yes, we can!”, Ben & Jerry’s supported the campaign with a special “Yes, pecan!” flavor. For Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist, the ice cream company invented “Cherry Garcia.” For flavors that don’t do so well — among them, astonishingly, the incredibly named “Fossil Fuel” — Ben & Jerry’s operates a mock graveyard where ice cream goes to die. This whimsical approach to marketing led to Ben & Jerry’s becoming pop culture, instead of merely referring to it. It’s thus not surprising that one of the most anticipated sneaker releases of 2020 is the Ben & Jerry’s Dunk Low, an official collaboration between Nike SB and Ben & Jerry’s. It’s difficult to describe the shoe in its full nature. The Swoosh is melting, the upper is a mix of hairy cowhide and blue leather, the heels feature clouds, the tongue label reads “Chunky Dunky” — just look at the damn pictures to grasp them in their full glory. If this weren’t such a colorful release, it’d drive even the most astute minds insane just by looking at it.
