Nike SB Orange Box

Designing a sneaker after the box it comes in is one of those postmodern moments in life when meaning and form seem to collapse, revealing a hidden truth in the process. You see, Nike’s famous orange shoe box is actually a signifier that signifies the shoe inside – when you see the box, you immediately have a Nike sneaker in mind. Now, when the shoe inside the box, i.e. the signified object contained within the signifier, itself looks like the box, one actually doesn’t know which object now refers to the other. In being designed like the box, the shoe now refers back to the box, changing its status from signified to signifier. And so it goes back and forth for all eternity until your brain starts to melt into jelly. The hidden truth: all meaning in life is constructed and utterly pointless. Lucky for you, there’s an upside: You can cover up the pointlessness of life by buying these beauties. Unfortunately, eternity is not the time-frame you’ll have to cop ‘em. If you’re not one of the lucky ones, don’t worry: there are three more box-inspired colorways heading our way. You can grab the Nike SB Orange Box limited edition from October 6 at Bonkers, both in-store and online.
