In his essay The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon, German philosopher, economist and redistribution enthusiast Karl Marx wrote one of his most famous – and most misquoted – statements. History, he says, repeats itself, “first as tragedy, then as farce.” Marx, of course, was referring to Napoleon I and Napoleon III (uncle and nephew, respectively), but the core of the message remains true today. Once an historic event is repeated, its second iteration is necessarily compared to its first occurrence – and often met with irony and sometimes even malice. Well, Polar Skate Co. sure is fortunate that we’re living in the Golden Age of Irony! Seriously, look at the pants, for example: the Big Boy jeans make a return, chaperoned by a striped cargo pant and the extensively printed TK Surf Pant. We’ve thus entered the first recurrence of the baggy pants: As you might know, ridiculously sized pants were popularized thanks to the hip hop youth culture in the 1990s. Some claim that wearing the sagging pants was inspired by US prison safety regulations which prohibited belts to prevent inmates from hanging themselves. What a beautiful story. However, it’s nice to see Polar playing with the baggy craze ironically, implicitly proving Marx right. Also returning from the 90s are colorful vertical stripes, which you’ll find on a pair of colorful t-shirts (which aremade in Portugal, as are all t-shirts in this drop). Stripes in general seem to dominate this collection: adding to the aforementioned striped Cargo Pant and the vertically striped t-shirts, the horizontally striped longsleeves employ more colors than you can poke a stick at. Finally, because this is Polar, the drop also features a bunch of artsy backprint shirts and an assortment of hip bags and dealer bags.
