In 2019, Gosha Rubchinskiy’s and Tolia Titaev’s Moscow-based skate brand Rassvet (PACCBET) made headlines with a collaborative capsule collection that featured a number Paul Gaugin’s post-impressionist paintings. The collection was realized in cooperation with the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, one of Moscow’s most established art institutes, and was pretty well-received — which prompted Rassvet and the Pushkin Museum to release a second one, this time taking inspiration from 19th-century Japanese prints. Based on the drawings and woodblock prints of Japanese Edo-period artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, the collection is a wildly colorful affair, featuring intricately marked figures and ornamentation. Specifically, the collection draws on the popular set of prints called “Snow, Moon, and Flowers with Valiant Warriors.“ The attention to detail and seeming movement of forms and colors, emphasized by a clear outlining technique similar to the drawing style ligne claire, is one of the key attractions of the art style, Ukiyo-e. As a result, Rassvet’s themed collection — comprised of a denim jacket, t-shirts (beige, black and red), a denim tote bag, and skateboard decks — will offer onlookers plenty to discover.
